Discovering New Horizons: Eckhard Köppen's Intercultural Journey at Vossloh

Eckhard Köppen's 25-year journey at Vossloh is a compelling story of adaptability, cultural understanding, and professional growth across borders. His career path, which began in Germany as a financial controller, evolved into a significant operational role that took him to China and back, showcasing the profound impact of intercultural experiences on personal and professional development. In our Enabling Green Mobility Podcast he took us along on his unique career path.

From the search for “more hands” on to the China adventure path

Köppen joined Vossloh in October 1999, where he initially focused on financial management for the former locomotive business and fastening systems. After several years, he sought “a more hands-on approach” within the company, which led him to Vossloh Fastening Systems. His background in economics, particularly his studies in Chinese language and culture, equipped him for the exciting challenge of establishing a factory in China. This move not only marked a pivotal point in his career but also set the stage for significant intercultural learning.

Embracing cultural differences and family adventures abroad

Living and working in China provided Köppen with invaluable insights into the nuances of communication and business practices distinctive to the region. He quickly learned that direct communication, typical in German culture, was often inappropriate in Chinese business contexts. Adapting to indirect communication styles became essential to maintaining harmony and fostering collaboration.

The decision to move abroad is often complex, especially for families. Köppen faced challenges when explaining the move to his children, who were well-integrated in their school life in Germany. His son, at just nine years old, expressed bewilderment at the idea of relocating to a country he knew little about. However, the family’s time in China turned into a rewarding experience. The children attended a German school, formed friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds, and gained a global perspective that enriched their lives.

Learning from everyday life and building bridges through understanding

Eckhard’s time in China was filled with memorable experiences that illustrated the importance of understanding cultural differences. For instance, he discovered that placing chopsticks upright in rice is considered disrespectful, akin to offering incense at a grave. Such nuances are essential in demonstrating respect within Chinese culture.

A humorous anecdote illustrates this further: Eckhard once jokingly said "Tschüss," which means goodbye in German, but in Chinese, it translates to "go die." His colleague’s shocked reaction served as a reminder of the complexities of language and the significance of cultural context.

These experiences not only provided Eckhard with rich stories but also emphasized the importance of cultural literacy in global business interactions.

Reflecting on his journey, Eckhard encourages young professionals to embrace international experiences. He believes that each culture offers valuable lessons and insights, which can significantly enhance one's professional journey. Adapting to diverse environments and learning from them can lead to personal growth and a deeper understanding of global markets.

Based on his experiences Eckhard is now leading Sales in Asia Pacific and Oceania for Vossloh Fastening Systems.
