Driving Innovation in Rail Maintenance: Inside Vossloh’s Special Machinery Unit

In a suburb of Hamburg, a revolution in rail maintenance is quietly unfolding at Vossloh’s special machinery production site. What happens here affects railways all over the globe, ensuring safer, faster, and more efficient connectivity. Leading this charge is Jörn Weinkauf, an industry and technical specialist with a penchant for simplifying even the most complex rail challenges. We had a chat with Jörn about smart maintenance, staying ahead and team traditions.

Proactive Rail Maintenance: Smarter and More Efficient

Did you know that maintaining rails is akin to brushing your teeth? Regular maintenance prevents “cavities” in railway tracks—those costly and disruptive defects that need major repairs or replacements. Vossloh’s grinding machines and compact milling solutions ensure rails stay in top shape, year-round. From hotspots in metropolitan areas to regular track overhaul, our technology provides tailored solutions that mean less downtime and lower costs for rail operators.

One standout project? Our collaboration with Deutsche Bahn to keep German railways running flawlessly with innovative tools like the VTM-compact and High-Speed Grinding trains. Together, we treat around 14,000 kilometers of rails annually in Germany alone, saving time while prioritizing smooth operations.

Worldwide Reach: Success Across Borders

While Vossloh’s roots are in Germany, our influence and machinery stretch across the globe. Over 40 High-Speed Grinding machines are already making a difference in Europe, North America, China, and even Australia—markets where the need for dependable rail infrastructure is on the rise.

China is a prime example. Explosive trends in metro construction drive demand for grinding trains like ours. Our high-speed grinders ensure newly built tracks last longer, reducing long-term maintenance costs.

A Trailblazer in Digitalization

Under Jörn Weinkauf’s leadership, our production facility isn’t just building machines—it’s transforming how we build. The motto: Work smarter, not harder. Real-time insights deliver important information for the production process. “It’s about staying ahead,” says Jörn. “Leveraging modern tools enables us to produce machines quickly, keep communication transparent, and increase productivity – all to the ultimate benefit of our customers.”

Embracing Innovation Together

A typical high-speed grinding machine is no small feat—it weighs 12 tons and is assembled with meticulous teamwork. In just six months, which is far quicker than industry norms, four to five specialists see a machine go from draft to delivery. And while our assembly teams are quick hands on the work floor, they also know how to celebrate. Each finished machine is commemorated with a team tradition—pizza parties to mark another milestone in enabling green mobility!

A Look Forward

Vossloh’s Special Machinery Production doesn’t just build machines; it also strengthens our ambition to create seamless, sustainable connections worldwide. As rail networks grow, so does the importance of our innovation. "Working at Vossloh has been a learning curve, but every day’s been rewarding—because not only am I contributing my past expertise, I’m borrowing from colleagues’ experience in return. We’re stronger when we all work as one team”, says Jörn Weinkauf.
