In a recent episode of the “Enabling Green Mobility” podcast, Timon Jonas sat down with Alexandra Feix, Vossloh’s Head of Data and AI, to discuss the impact of data, the role of AI, and the creation of “EdChat”, Vossloh’s very own AI platform.
Smart decisions call for structured data
“Accurate, structured data is crucial for making smart business decisions,” said Alexandra, as she discussed her global role in data and AI at Vossloh. Highlighting Vossloh's legacy, she acknowledged the extensive data collected and built over decades from products, processes, and employees. But the challenge remains: how to make this wealth of information contextual and accessible across global teams and business units, many of which operate autonomously.
Addressing this ongoing task, Alexandra and her team are centralizing and structuring Vossloh's internal knowledge base, ensuring that data is harnessed as an asset for efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. The objective: Making precise decisions powered by precise information.
The journey to AI or “EdChat” is born
One of the cornerstone projects in Vossloh's AI initiatives is the development of a tailored internal platform called “EdChat.” Inspired by emerging tools like ChatGPT and rooted in maintaining data security, EdChat embodies efficiency and innovation. Alexandra described its purpose as essential: a tool created to keep Vossloh’s proprietary knowledge secure while fostering collaboration and enhancing internal processes through artificial intelligence.
The exceptional name, “EdChat,” pays tribute to Vossloh’s founder, Eduard Vossloh, reflecting the company’s harmonious balance between rich history and forward-thinking advancements.
The tool enables every employee to simplify processes, challenge ideas, and iterate projects with greater efficiency. And with even greater capabilities still to come.

Addressing challenges with vision and starting step-by-step
As the team highlights AI’s game-changing possibilities, Alexandra stressed that confronting the accompanying challenges is just as essential. Privacy, data security, and sustainability are of utmost importance. Vossloh ensures that all AI operations meet stringent security requirements while continually monitoring AI’s environmental footprint. “AI can be energy-intensive, but sustainable practices are in place to offset the company’s carbon emissions associated with new technologies”, said Alexandra.
Furthermore, Vossloh has created an AI community providing employees with trainings, tutorials, and a space to discuss and explore creative ideas with an AI-literate peer group. “The AI journey starts with small steps,” Alexandra encourages, advising her colleagues to embrace EdChat with an open mind and take an active role in shaping its development
Wanted (and needed): A cultural shift
So what motivates Alexandra? She sees data and data/AI understanding as the missing link in many organizations. Thus, it will be a skill that will shape the next wave of technological change. Her focus on clear, well-sourced communication reflects the belief that only transparent, high-quality input can unlock AI systems that truly serve employees and the business.
