GSM-R systems locked behind costly, outdated hardware Problem description
GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) is the standard for secure railway communication across Europe and other major networks. However, only certified railway phones (OPH) can access it – these are costly, bulky, and less user-friendly than modern mobile devices.
Railway personnel often carry two phones: one for GSM-R communication and another for regular use. This creates inefficiencies and increases both equipment costs and complexity. Off-the-shelf smartphones are incompatible with GSM-R, making direct integration impossible.
