In times of increasingly preventive rail processing, rail milling is taking on a new role in the complex structure of rail maintenance. The demands placed on maintenance planners and plant managers are increasing in terms of performance, shift capacities, and flexibility. In terms of efficiency, VTM-performance enables excellent results when processing long sections and eliminating deep defects. Thanks in particular to the newly developed face-milling technology, the high-performance milling train achieves new dimensions in terms of working speed and surface quality. Combined with the efficient extraction system, the technology works practically residue-free on the track.
Greater precision in removal and profiling
The milling wheel on the VTM-performance, with a diameter of 1,400 mm, is more than twice as large as a regular one. This ensures maximum surface quality, higher working speeds, and greater material removal after processing. The material is extracted directly and completely into a bunker, so that no contamination remains thanks to encapsulated milling units. Finishing is carried out using a new type of face-milling machine, replacing the final grinding process so that no grinding dust or sparks are produced here either. The chips produced during the milling process are extracted and collected in a chip bunker with a capacity of several tons for disposal. The integrated measurement technology for longitudinal ripple and transverse profile measurement as well as eddy current testing takes over the inspection of the reprofiled rail after machining.
Exceptional processing speed
The VTM-performance milling train from Vossloh operates at a standard working speed of 1.2 km/h with a material removal rate of 2.5 mm on the running surface. Even severe rail defects can be repaired in a single pass, with the rail being precisely reprofiled and restored to almost new condition.

Extremely flexible
This milling train can be used universally on local transport, heavy-duty, and high-speed lines: The clearance profile of VTM-performance is adapted to the English W6a profile, making the train compact enough for the British rail network. Another key advantage: the milling wheel is composed of individual cassette elements that can be quickly – and if needed, separately – replaced within the machine, eliminating the need for full disassembly during tool changes. The result: reduced downtime and increased operational availability.
